A worm gear on the motor shaft turns a small gear wheel. This wheel also acts as a crank because it has a connecting rod fixed near its rim. The connecting rod drives a rack, which moves RACK back and forth as the gear wheel turns. The rack meshes with pinion gears on the wiper blades.
