OCR: WINDSHIELD WIPERS A GEAR AND A CRANK convert the steady spin of an electric motor into the back-and-forth motion of a car's windshield wipers. A worm gear on the motor shaft turns a small gear wheel. This wheel also acts as a crank because it has a connecting rod fixed near its rim. The connecting rod drives a rack, which moves RACK back and forth as the gear wheel turns. The rack meshes with pinion gears on the wiper blades.
